Escape, lingering fear, grief, worlds ending, and the prophet's song.
We’ve made it to the end of Queen B Reads Prophet Song, and I just feel . . . devastated. I’m not sure why I held out hope for a happier ending seeing the trajectory of the story and knowing the patterns of dystopian literature; nevertheless, here I am, a sad little pile of mush and anger and exhaustion.
We’re wrapping up this novel by reflecting on Chapter Nine. With the loss of her son, Eilish is finally ready to flee Ireland once and for all. In the haze of her grief, she’s not ready for the final challenges she’ll have to navigate to cross the border, taking what’s left of herself and her family to some semblance of safety. But no matter the solace they’ll find as they leave Ireland, this war has taken every ounce of hope from Eilish. There’s no going back, to home, to her husband, or to who she was before the war.
